Aldeburgh Festival/ Riot Ensemble premiere

Date(s) - 19/03/2022
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Zoë’s beautiful and dramatic bassoon piece “Salamander’, written and premiered in lockdown 2020, released on October House Records, is given its first live performance at Aldeburgh Festival this year.

The pioneering Riot Ensemble makes its Aldeburgh Festival debut with premieres of works by Zoë Martlew, Farzia Fallah and Soosan Lolovar, and builds to a climax in Australian composer Liza Lim’s piece, Extinction events and dawn chorus. Through music and field recordings, Lim summons up things which became extinct in the human era – some of which are lost in the past and some that refuse to disappear, such as our plastic waste which poisons the oceans. The work ends with the sounds of a dawn chorus, not of birds, but of fish at a coral reef.

Zoë Martlew: Salamander (first performance with live audience) (11)
Farzia Fallah:This Burning Mass, a Feast of Colours (2022, Britten Pears Arts commission, first performance) (10)
Soosan Lolavar:undone (first performance with live audience) (5)
Liza Lim:Extinction events and dawn chorus (40)
